What’s in a name?

Traditional accounting / financial systems are a great starting point for a new business. But as your business grows, there is tremendous value in having a single system that supports more of your business and extends beyond the financial team. ERP, or Enterprise Resource Planning, is a commonly used term for systems that provide those additional modules. (You might also sometimes see CPM – Corporate Performance Management – used to describe those same solutions.)

  • Moving to a provider like Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure will likely give you improved reliability, security, and access, as their massive data center infrastructure already has redundancy, connectivity, and onsite support that most individual companies can’t afford
  • Applications designed for the cloud are generally designed to be accessible by more devices and from any location. If you can connect from phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, you can conduct business more easily. If you don’t have to wait until you get back to the office, information is often more timely.

But many cloud solutions will still require your IT team to manage servers, backups, software upgrades, etc.

The next step in simplification for the business using a piece of software is a SAAS (Software As A Service) solution. With this approach, the software you need is installed and managed by the vendor in their cloud environment. You get all the benefits of a cloud solution while eliminating the need for your IT department to deal with servers, backups, upgrades, and all the rest.
